Roofing is tough, Having the right tools makes it easier

We use our International High Lift Truck for most re-roof projects. It keeps the job site clean, easier to load and unload materials, and keeps the crew safer. At the end of the day we head back to the shop leaving the driveway and garage available to the owner. No Dumpsters. Call for a quote on your roof!

Skylights are nothing to be afraid of, we install skylights many times a month. They really can change those interior areas that are too dark the lights need to be on during the day. On this weeks job we installed two 14" Solatube skylights on a home in north Melbourne, the difference was like night and day (pun intended!)

Each skylight is good for approximately 350 ft of area

Our high-lift truck makes work a lot easier, it's our mobile work platform. It carries a large job box with all our tools, coolers of ice water and Gatorade, with room for all the tear off debris. Check out the umbrellas.

Rust never sleeps-or- Effects of High Salinity in Brevard County Beachside roofing

Galvanized Steel Metal products are quite common in roofing throughout the US. Away from salt water locations they last a long time. Beachside in Brevard county the salt in our cool ocean breeze will oxidize (rust) galvanized steel. Aluminum will resist that corrosive action, stainless steel and copper will also, but are a bit more expensive.

We recently replaced these two galvanized attic vents. We installed a 2x6 curb, 12" lead flashings, and Aluminum Off Ridge Vents. These should last the life of the roof.

Re-roofing in Indian Harbour Beach FL 32937, Metal Roofing

We have done a number of projects for the city of Indian Harbour Beach. Many of them are in their  beautiful parks. The beachside parks are well maintained, great for family outings.

This particular project was on one of the pavilions at Oars and Paddles Park. This place draws rowing clubs from all over the world. Olympic training, University clubs, you name it. The local canals and rivers off the Indian River (Lagoon) provide protected waterways ideal for crew functions.

Brevard County Re-Roofing

It's been a while from my last blog entry, doesn't see much action anyway, but I thought, what the heck, let's see what happens.

I rehired one of my former foreman as crew leader, with 4 other guys, we have a great, efficient crew. We have been doing mostly single story, single family homes. We will leave the big two or more story jobs for the other roofers with the large crews.

Certainteed Landmark shingles with Flintlastic SA modified bitumen  on the cricket, both in the Weathered Wood color

We removed the shingles, re-nailed the plywood with 8d ring shank nails, and installed a self-adhesive shingle underlayment. The shingles were installed with 6 Stainless Steel ring shank roofing nails per shingle. With the perimeter shingles set in flashing cement and the Starter strip on the eaves and gables, this roof is nearly indestructible.

I actually installed the original roof in 1988 or 89. This December anniversary puts us in our 42nd year!

Melbourne Beach roofing

It has been a few months since my last blog, time flies!

Not that I get much response from these, I like to put it out there in internet cyberspace.

This is from our last job in Melbourne Beach, The amount of wood work can be directly related to the double layer of shingles on this 40 year old home. It had the original roof and one additional layer of shingles. It leaked so badly, the eaves were all damaged. We also replaced the original fascia and soffit with new white fascia and soffit. The Dog Days of August

146.8 F on the roof surface at 11 am, heat index was 106 this day
this is the result of poor flashing details at the dormer valleys
This job in North Melbourne was hot hot hot. It was the original roof from 1988 or so. The loose granules made this 6/12 a bit difficult. The guys all wear Cougar Paws, so that helped

Re-roofing in Florida's rainy season

when roofing in Florida during the rainy season (if you are in doubt when that is... right now, you are in it!) you Better have some plastic ready to go quick. A roll of plastic may cost $100 (for 6 mil), that is the cheapest insurance you can buy. We may precut the piece to length before it even threatens rain, Not too long ago, a roofer in Orlando got caught with his pants down (no plastic), 6PM news loved showing the videos of the collapsed ceilings, angry customers, very preventable with a little fore thought

once the self-adhesive modified bitumen shingle underlayment is installed, we can relax, this stuff is awesome

1x12 decking upgrades

Notice the large gaps between the boards, although 1x12 is a good structural decking, it does not make a good subtrate for shingles. The nails in the shingles can fall in the gaps, leaving a nice hole for leaks. The boards can also twist and cup, popping the nails, again, a new entry point for water.

Preparation is key. We always clean right to the 1x12 so we can fasten into the trusses. Some of my competitors will leave the old felt or underlayments and fasten the new plywood without regard to position on the trusses
