My Way - My Page

J. K. Behan Roofing
Before: preparation of the gas vent, care must be taken not to move the gas vent out of positionDSCN0031
After: roof touch up paint adds that detail that makes the job complete

This was direct quote from this Angie’s List customer:   “I saw only  a couple of reviews that had some negativity. I've been in the contracting business for 45 years and I can assure you Jim Behan has more integrity and knowledge of his business than one could hope for. He manages a great crew, respectful of the homeowner, his property, etc. I would recommend him to anyone I know, friends and family alike. If your looking for a source make sure you talk to Jim if you want a really dependable contractor. No short cuts, he makes sure you get a really quality job.”  Robert B. Melbourne Re-Roof

International High Lift Truck makes work much easier

Friday, July 5, 2013

Suntree Re-Roof, 38 squares of shingles replaced, new plywood installed over exposed 1x12

Proper spacing is essential when installing plywood, 1/8" is recommended. reduces chances of "picture framing", warping, or buckling caused by movement (thermal or moisture can cause this)
This upper photo is actually the "after", below is the "before"

It is easy to see why 1x12 lumber does Not make a good base for shingles (or much else)

St. Patrick's Day 2013 Parade

Behan's Traditional Irish Cottage
Thanks to Mike Smith, he sent me this picture he took of our float in the AOH St. Patrick's Day Parade in downtown Melbourne, March 16, 2013.

Look close and you see my beautiful wife Karen, with the cowboy hat, and Quinn, the yellow lab, laying at her feet

Also there but not shown, my daughter, Tara and her husband, Brendan. They looked great. Handing out candy, they could hardly keep up!

We had about three days of labor, constructing the cottage. Based on an image found on the web, we tried to simulate the slate roof with Certainteed Presidential shingles, custom fabricated aluminum drip edge and copper ridge cap. The chimneys would have allowed for a dry ice "smoke" if we had had the time to get it together. Thanks to all who had a hand in it!

Tile Re-Roof in Melbourne FL

This week we finally finished the Tile Re-roof we have been working on for three weeks!! The finished product was well worth the extra time and work we put into the job! We started with a Polyglass TU Plus self-adhesive tile underlayment installed directly on the plywood decking. The guys installed the tile with Insta-Foam urethane foam tile adhesive. In choosing a long lasting tile roof, make sure the best materials and procedures are used. It can make the difference between a long, trouble-free roof and a roof plagued with problems!

Melbourne Beach Roofing

The owners of this shingle roof home decided to replace the fascia with 2x8 Cedar and 1x2 p.t. They replaced the soffit which was also an optional improvement to the shingle installation. This photo depicts an employee installing these new enhancements.

Indian Harbour Beach VFD gets a new roof

Indian Harbour Beach Fire Department
Replacing the original roof was not premature. There were leaks at the two drains from cracks in the PVC drains. and the drip edge had separation, allowing water underneath.  We installed retrofit 4" Olympic Hercules drains, 36:" lead soaker sheets, and new wall coping and drip edge.

Prayer needed

We are asking everyone to say a prayer for "Darkhorse" 3rd Battalion 5th Marines and their families. They are fighting it out in Afghanistan & they have lost 12 marines in 4 days.

IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE the message spread if more people could pass it on.  Nothing has been in the media about these guys because no one seems to care.

 They are:

Justin Allen, 23; Brett Linley, 29; Matthew Weikert, 29;

Justus Bartett, 27; Dave Santos, 21; Chase Stanley, 21;

Jesse Reed, 26; Matthew Johnson, 21; Zachary Fisher, 24;

Brandon King, 23; Christopher Goeke, 23; Sheldon Tate, 27.

All are Marines that gave their lives for YOU this week.

They gave their last full measure of devotion for you. How about you do something for them?

Roof to Wall Connections
With the insurance companies being more and more exacting, we are making sure our customers get applicable discounts . We added nails to the existing straps, we checked each one, made sure there were three nails on one side and one nail on the opposing side to qualify for "single wrap straps". Otherwise they would only qualify as "Toe Nailed" roof to wall connections.

We are all getting raked over the coals...

Satellite Beach Roofing

Installing self-adhesive shingle underlayment
This was an old tile roof that had 1x12 decking, we added plywood over the 1x and tapered insulation to the flat roof

Tapered Iso Board cut to fit
It takes a bit of experience to make this fit as it should, It really gets the water off the roof.

40 year old tile roof, mopped right to the deck, one of the toughest to remove
  This home on Merritt Island finally got the attention it needed. Surprisingly, the interior damage was not  bad. It had an interesting plaster ceiling to wall radius

Indialantic Re-Roof
This older home originally had a tile roof, 1x8 decking. The decking would have been a problem with the spaces between, knots, etc. We decided to redeck with 1/2" plywood over the existing. This one will last. Certainteed shingles, Flintlastic SA flat roof, good to go!

What a wreck!  It is fulfilling when we get there it is leaking like a sieve, and no problems when we leave.

This roof had three roofs on it, the owner was getting repairs done every two years with little effect.

That nose of Quinn's got him in Trouble! last Thursday he was stung by wasps, bees, maybe just fire ants, but he had an allergic reaction, looked like a Shar-pei.
I was up with him two nights in a row, thought he was not gonna make it.
Between the antihistamines, cortisone, antibiotics, and popsicles. he is Back!

Chimney repairs

Why is it that so many chimneys leak on tile roofs? answer- the roofers that did the flashing originally had no idea how to do it, sure the tile is easy, the flashing takes some knowledge and forethought
